Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you the Reverend Arthur Bruce Barbour Moore, BA, DD, and ask that you confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, for distinguished service to Canadian education.
Dr. Moore was born in New Brunswick and educated in Montreal, graduating from McGill with honours in history and from United College with a travelling fellowship which allowed him to visit Europe and to spend a year in Oxford.
After a period in the ministry in Canada and the United States he came to Westminster Church in Saskatoon ten years ago and rapidly established himself as a speaker of warm and natural eloquence, a friend of wide sympathy and good will, with a special interest in the problems of education, all qualities which led fittingly to his appointment as Principal of St. Andrew's College in 1946.
In that office he was noteworthy for the zest and energy with which he visited every part of the province, even the most remote, speaking on behalf of his college; for the effectiveness of his excellent lectures, usually given without notes, to the envy of his colleagues and the wonder of his students; and for the close and cordial relations which he maintained and promoted between St. Andrew's College and the University.
It was therefore no surprise when it was announced in 1950, before he had completed his fourth year as principal, that he had been called to one of the eminent posts in Canadian education, to the Presidency of Victoria University, the great Arts College within the federation of the University of Toronto. His achievement in that office has matched all our friendly expectations, has given him high place among Canadian university leaders, and has made him most worthy of the honour which I now ask you to confer upon him.
