Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Council and Senate, I present to you William Craig McNamara.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Mr. McNamara’s 1ifetme of outstanding service to the grain trade of Western Canada had its beginnings in 1924 with the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. In 1942 he joined the Canadian Wheat Board staff and rose rapidly in the ranks of that organization, becoming Chief Commissioner in 1958, the position which he still holds.
The sale of the huge quantities of Prairie cereal grains in domestic and international markets has been his primary responsibility. The magnitude of this function unquestionably entitles him to be described as Canada’s Number One Salesman.
Sales promotion has taken him to all corners of the world. In recent years he has had signal success in negotiating long-term wheat sale contracts with countries in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union and Mainland China.
On the national scene Mr. McNamara is the senior advisor to government on gra.n policies and trade. Internationally he has represented Canada at every International Wheat Agreement Conference and at many sessions of the Wheat Council.
His knowledge and expertise as a grain merchant, his strong integrity and sound judgment are widely acclaimed at home and abroad. Financially each Canadian in some measure, and Western Canadians in large measure, are the beneficiaries of his success as a grain merchant.
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you William Craig McNamara and ask that you will confer on him the Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
