Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Council and Senate, I present to you, Robert Laird Houston.
SASKATCHEWAN HAS FEW NATIVE SONS WHO HAVE SERVED THEIR COUNTRY SO WELL AND SO LONG. COLONEL HOUSTON HAS HAD SEVERAL PROFESSIONAL CAREERS AND HAS FACILITATED MANY ENDEAVOURS, INCLUDING UNITED WORLD COLLEGES, AN ORGANIZATION AIMED AT ESTABLISHING INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL TO PROMOTE WIDER INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING. RECENTLY, HE WAS MADE A KNIGHT OF GRACE OF THE MILITARY AND HOSPITALLER ORDER OF ST. LAZARUS OF JERUSALEM.
BORN IN MELVILLE, SASKATCHEWAN, ROBERT HOUSTON WAS RAISED IN THE OTTAWA VALLEY. IN 193^, HE GRADUATED IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING FROM CLARKSON COLLEGE IN POTSDAM, NEW YORK. THE FOLLOWING YEAR, ROBERT WAS COMMISIONED IN THE ROYAL CANADIAN CORPS OF SIGNALS.
DURING HIS LONG AND DISTINGUISHED MILITARY CAREER, HE ATTENDED THE FOLLOWING MILITARY COLLEGES - BRITISH ARMY STAFF COLLEGE, THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES STAFF COLLEGE AND THE NATIONAL DEFENCE COLLEGE OF CANADA. ALSO, ROBERT HOUSTON WAS AN INSTRUCTOR AT THE CANADIAN ARMY STAF.F COLLEGE IN KINGSTON AND THE "NATO DEFENCE COLLEGE IN PARIS.
DURING WORLD WAR II, HE SERVED WITH THE FOURTH CANADIAN ARMOURED DIVISIONAL SIGNALS AND WAS AWARDED THE FRENCH CROIX DE GUERRE.
UNTIL HIS RETIREMENT AT THE RANK OF COLONEL IN 1966, HE SERVED IN A NUMBER OF CAPACITIES IN THE CANADIAN ARMY, COMMANDER OF THE THIRD CANADIAN DIVISIONAL SIGNALS OF THE CANADIAN OCCUPATIONAL FORCE IN GERMANY, DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS AND PLANS FOR THE CANADIAN ARMY, CHAIRMAN OF A PLANNING COMMITTEE OF THE U.S. - CANADA PERMANENT JOINT BOARD OF DEFENCE.
SINCE 1966, COLONEL HOUSTON HAS SERVED AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE CANADA – JAPAN TRADE COUNCIL. THIS COUNCIL INCLUDED SOME 500 CANADIAN AND JAPANESE COMPANIES AND INDIVIDUALS. DURING HIS ACTIVE BUSINESS CAREER, HE HAS ALSO FOUND TIME TO SERVE AS CHAIRMAN OF THE CANADIAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE OF UNITED WORLD COLLEGES, AS PATRON OF THE LESTER B. PEARSON COLLEGE OF THE PACIFIC, AS DIRECTOR OF THE ROYAL CANADIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY, AS PAST PRESIDENT OF THE NATO DEFENCE COLLEGE ASSOCIATION OF CANADA, AND AS CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR THE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOHN G. DIEFENBAKER CENTRE.
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you Robert Laird Houston and ask that you will confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
