Eminent Chancellor, I am pleased to present to you Mr. Daryl Kenneth Seaman; a distinguished engineer, a successful businessman, a leader in society, and a good friend of our College of Engineering aid the University of Saskatchewan.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Mr. Seaman was born in Rouleau, Saskatchewan, in 1922 and graduated from high school there in 1939. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and served as a bomber pilot with the Royal Air Force in North Africa and Italy from 1941 to 1945. For his service he was mentioned in dispatches and awarded the Croix de Guerre by the Government of France.
After the war, Mr. Seaman returned to Saskatchewan and graduated in Mechanical Engineering in 1948. The following year, 1949, Mr. Seaman and his two brothers, Byron and Donald, incorporated a small seismic drilling company in Alberta. This company later expanded into oil and gas well drilling, and oil and gas exploration and development. In 1962 the name of the company was changed to Bow Valley Industries Limited. It is currently a world wide explorer and developer of energy resources and has extensive manufacturing operations in Canada.
In addition to being Chairman of the Board and a Director of Bow Valley Industrie Ltd., Mr. Seaman is also a Director of Crown Trust Company; Crown Trust Advisory Board; Pan-Alberta Gas Ltd.; Revelstoke Companies Ltd.; Marathon Realty Ltd.; Nova, An Alberta Corporation; and he is on the Board of Regents of the Athol Murray College of Notre Dame.
Mr. Seaman is an enthusiastic sportsman; hunting, skiing, playing golf and “hockey” on Bow Valley’s “house team”. His interest in hockey began in Rouleau where he played hockey as an amateur. It has culminated in the ownership of the Calgary Flames of the N.H.L. Mr. Seaman has also been instrumental in the formation of the Calgary Flames Sports Foundation dedicated to the education of hockey players and the evolution of advancement of hockey at all levels.
Mr. Seanan was also the Chairman of a committee that was established in 1969 in Calgary to raise money for the renovation and expansion of our Engineering Building. Later, it became the forerunner of our very successful National Campaignì for Engineering Equipment.
