Allen Blakeney completed the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees at Daihousie University in 1947. Mr. Blakeney then attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts in 1949 and a Master of Arts in 1955. He was called to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1950 and the Saskatchewan Bar in 1951.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Mr. Blakeney entered the public service as secretary and solicitor for the Crown Corporations of the Province of Saskatchewan from 1950-55 and was Chair of the Saskatchewan Securities Commission from 1955-58.
He entered politics in 1960 and served as Minister of Education, 1960-61; Provincial Treasurer, 1961-62; Minister of Public Health, 1962-64; Leader of the Opposition, 1970-71 and 1982-87 and Premier, 1971 -82. On his retirement from political life in 1988 he was appointed Bora Laskin Professor of Constitutional Law, Osgood Hall Law School, 1988-90. In 1990 he was appointed the Inaugural Law Foundation of Saskatchewan Professor at the College of Law of this University. Since moving to Saskatchewan he has also participated in the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Affairs and he has continued to enjoy prominence in discussions of constitutional change in Canada and in democratic reform abroad, particularly in South Africa and the republics which used to be part of the former Soviet Union.
After completing his term as Law Foundation Professor, Mr. Blakeney has remained in the College as Scholar in Residence and has performed innumerable services for the College of Law. He has just finished serving as managing editor of a board of editors who have been responsible for producing a major book, shortly to be published by MacMillans International, on the subject of self-determination.
