Convocation date: April 3, 1997
Special Convocation: 90th Anniversary Convocation
Discipline / contribution: arts and culture
Citation / biographical information:
Marketa Newman received her BA. from the University of Saskatchewan in English and French Literature in 1962 and her B.L.S. degree from the University of Toronto in 1964. From 1964 until her retirement she worked in the University of Saskatchewan Library in the Cataloguing Department, Acquisitions Department and the Collection Development Unit.
As a librarian at the University of Saskatchewan, Mrs. Newman made important contributions to the development of the Art Collection of the University, a legacy that continues to enrich the University. However, her most significant contribution to the University of Saskatchewan and the Province of Saskatchewan is in the area of visual arts. Her interest in the visual arts culminated with the publication of the Biographical Dictionary of Saskatchewan Artists - Women Artists (Saskatoon: Fifth House, 1990) and the Biographical Dictionary of Saskatchewan Artists - Men Artists (Saskatoon: Fifth House, 1994). This impressive two-volume dictionary, described as representing a massive contribution to art scholarship in and of this Province has become an indispensable tool for artists, dealers, educators and museums across Canada. The project required a prodigious scholarly effort and was completed over a ten-year period.
Mrs. Newman is continuing her work in the scholarly documentation of Saskatchewan’s artists and is currently working on a project on folk artists.
As a patron of the visual arts, she continues to play an active role through purchases for private collections as well as gifts to the Mendel Gallery.
