Honorary Degree Recipient, A.C. Moxon, 1953 (Photograph Collection, A-1681)
Name: Arthur Moxon, B.A., B.C.L., Q.C.
Convocation date: May 8, 1953
Discipline / contribution: university administration
Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you the last survivor of the little band of five pioneers who constituted the original faculty of this University: Bateman, Ling, Moxon, Murray, and Oliver. They showed all the pioneers' boldness and resourcefulness in opening new areas and meeting new problems in higher education. The planning of the whole institution was a joint effort in which Arthur Moxon played his full part, but the success of the College of Law was his special responsibility and achievement. His contributions included not only the planning and the quality of his teaching but also his ability to instil in his students a lasting appreciation of the ethics of legal practice.
From those first days in 1909 until the present Mr. Moxon has served the University almost continuously and very effectively as professor, dean, senator, governor, Chairman of the Board, and advisor and helper to everyone on matters both academic and personal. No living man has had a greater influence in University affairs.
Outside the University he has long been a recognized and greatly respected leader of the legal profession. He has always been active in good causes.
It is specially fitting that we should honor him at this time when, having served the full term permitted by law, he is about to retire from the Board of Governors where his remarkable abilities, practical wisdom, and penetrating wit will be greatly missed.
Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate of the University I ask you to confer on Arthur Moxon the degree of Doctor of Civil Law, honoris causa.
Degree received: Doctor of Civil Law
Degree presented by: W.P. Thompson, President
