Mr. Chancellor —
I present to you the Right Honourable James G. Gardiner, Farmer, teacher and parliamentarian.
Mr. Gardiner was born in Ontario. He came to the Western Prairie before Saskatchewan was created a province. While working as a farm labourer, he completed the Arts course at the University of Manitoba attaining his Bachelor of Arts degree. He then settled permanently in what is now Saskatchewan. He became a school teacher and later a farmer. In 1914 he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan.
Few men have achieved the distinction of an unbroken period of 43 years in elective office. Such was the record of Mr. Gardiner. For 21 years he was a member of the provincial legislature. Twice during that period he was Premier of Saskatchewan. In 1935 he entered the House of Commons and became Minister of Agriculture in the Government of Canada. He occupied that high position for 22 years.
M Gardiner has devoted his entire adult life to the service of his province and of his country. While he will best be remembered in Canada as a champion of the farmers’ cause, throughout the Western World he will be remembered as the man who made an outstanding contribution to the allied victory in the second world war through his efficient and energetic direction of the mobilization of the food resources of Canada. For this work he was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II, who, “was pleased that he be sworn of Her Majesty’s Most Honourable Privy Council.”
In recognition of almost a half century of distinguished public service I ask you Mr. Chancellor, to confer upon the Right Honourable James G0 Gardiner the degree, Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Degree presented by: The Honourable Justice Mr. E.M. Culliton
