Citation / biographical information:
Mr. Porter’s renown as a horticulturist is mainly the result of his outstanding successes in breeding and selecting improved varieties of lilies. Lilies he has developed have been acclaimed internationally by such organizations as the North American Lily Society. Over the years, he has stressed the development of such characteristics as hardiness, fruit or flower quality, and disease and insect resistance. As a result, his Honeywood Nursery is known world wide and distributes lily bulbs throughout North America as well as to such countries as Argentina, Australia, Czechoslovakia, Britain, Japan, and the USSR.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Mr. Porter is also recognized for developing varieties of strawberry, raspberry, black current, crabapple, gooseberry and sandcherry-plum. One of the hardiest black raspberries now available is his variety Honeywood Black. He has also developed an excellent saskatoon berry named Honeywood. Although in his 80s, he still puts in a full day at the Honeywood Nursey and continues to introduce new varieties of plants.
Awards he has received include a silver medal and commemorative scroll at the German Garden Show in Stuttgart, in 1977, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society Gold Medal in 1969, and honorary life memberships in various horticultural organizations.
Besides working on behalf of various horticultural groups, Mr. Porter has found time to serve his community other ways. He served on the board of the Shellbrook Credit Union, which he helped establish, chaired the Parkside School Board, and was a trustee for the Parkland School District. For 25 years, he chaired the Shellbrook Rural Telephone Company, one of the last in the province to be taken over by Sask Tel.
