Mr Chancellor, on behalf of the Council and Senate, I present to you Bryan Robert Clarke.Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Bryan Clarke came to Canada from Australia, where, after war service in the Royal Australian Air Force, he had taken Honours B.A. and the Diploma in Education at the University of Melbourne, later studying under Sir Arthur Ewing at Manchester University where he received his Ph.D., his thesis topic being the auditory training of profoundly deaf children.
In 1968, he was appointed to the faculty of the University of British Columbia, to develop the first full-time professional training program in Canada for teachers of the hearing impaired.
The program at U.B.C. has served Canada well, especially western Canada. Among his other activities, Professor Clarke was consultant to the then Minister of Education in Saskatchewan at a critical period in the history of deaf education in this province; the present Principal of the R.J.D. Williams Provincial School for the Deaf on Cumberland Avenue is a former student of Professor Clarke's, and Dr. Clarke's program has furnished a steady stream of excellent instructors for the University of Saskatchewan's part-time program for the preparation of teachers of the hearing impaired.
Professor Clarke is an outstanding example of what a university professor ought to be. He has received awards from his own university for outstanding teaching, while he has received prizes for outstanding research at the national level. Internationally, he has served as consultant to Departments of Education in Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Currently, he is the Head, the first Head, of the new Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education at the University of British Columbia.
Mr Chancellor, I present to you Bryan Robert Clarke and ask that you will confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
