Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Council and Senate, I present you Mr. James Edward (Ted) Newall, internationally renowned industrialist and distinguished Canadian. Mr. Newall has made an outstanding contribution to Canadian industry and to his alma mater, the University of Saskatchewan.
He has distinguished himself in a lifetime career with Du Pont which he joined in 1958 immediately after receiving his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan. He started work at Du Pont's sales order desk in Toronto and subsequently worked in sales promotion, sales development, direct sales, and a succession of positions in sales management. Since 1972, his assignments have included director of the company's fibres group; vice-president, corporate development; vice-president, marketing; and executive vice-president. Since September, 1978, he has been Du Pont Canada's President and Chief Executive Officer and in December, 1979 was appointed Chair of the Board of Directors.
In November, 1989, he became Group Vice-President International, assuming responsibility for E. L. Du Pont's operations in Europe, Asia and Latin America while continuing as Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Du Pont Canada Inc.
Mr. Newall's keen interest in improving the climate for business in Canada and the relationships between governments and the private sector has had a significant influence on Canadian industry. He has served as Chair of the Advisory Committee to the Prime Minister on Business/Government Executive Exchange, as a member of the International Trade Advisory Committee and currently serves on the Advisory Group to the Prime Minister on Executive Compensation in the Public Sector. He is Past-Chair and Director of the Conference Board of Canada and Chair of the Business Council on National Issues.
James Edward Newall is a member of the Advisory Committee, School of Business Administration, University of Western Ontario. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Alcan Aluminium Limited, BCE Inc., Canada Packers Inc., the Molson Companies Limited, Pratt & Whitney Canada Inc., and the Royal Bank of Canada.
Saskatchewan has been well served by Mr. Newall. He served as a co-chair of the fund raising campaign to support the College of Agriculture Building, the single greatest fund-raising initiative the University has ever undertaken. He has given of himself in countless ways and has provided excellent leadership for the many friends of the University working on the campaign. The success of the campaign is evidence of the quality of his contribution.
Mr. Newall's record is one of exceptional service and of leadership. He is an an outstanding graduate of our University who leads by example; a graduate who has distinguished himself in his chosen field of endeavour; and a graduate who continues to serve his alma mater. It is fitting that the University of Saskatchewan confer an Honorary Degree on this outstanding Canadian whose guiding philosophy has been a commitment to ideals and who has worked continuously toward fulfilment of those ideals.
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you Dr. James Edward Newall and ask that you will confer on him the Degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa.
