Convocation date: May 14, 1955
Special Convocation: Special Convocation held in connection with the formal opening of the University Hospital
Discipline / contribution: medicine ; community service
Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you a highly respected surgeon of Regina, whose grandparents came from Scotland and Ireland. This fact probably accounts for the solid pertinacity of purpose of this man which no doubt comes from the bonnie vales of Scotland, whilst the humor, humanity and courtesy which he displays may be traced to the green shores of Eire.
He was not always a surgeon. In 1910 he graduated from Manitoba University in arts and for two years taught school in Saskatchewan. Then the persuasive arguments of Dr. Sahlmark, together with the prospect of playing on the Medical Faculty football team induced him to take up medicine, and in 1916 he graduated M.D. He then entered the armed forces as a Medical Officer till 1919 at which time he went into partnership with Dr. Hugh MacLean of Regina. So happy and admirable was this partnership that he has given a scholarship for the best student in surgery to graduate in 19$7, and in all subsequent years, as a permanent testimony to Dr. MacLean.
He has held numerous executive positions in the medical organizations of Regina, of the Province, and of the Dominion. In 1934 he was chairman of the Regina Public School Board, in which capacity he was instrumental in the promotion of the inoculation of diphtheria toxoid in the Regina area, which has eliminated diphtheria from that area.
Apart from his professional associations, he has been a patron of the arts, an ardent supporter of the Roughriders football team, and a man active in the affairs of his community.
It is particularly appropriate that we honor John Boyle Ritchie at this time as he is the immediate past president of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan in this year of the opening of this University Hospital and of the fiftieth anniversary of this province, and, therefore, by honoring him we honor the body corporate of the Medical Profession of Saskatchewan.
Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate of the University I ask you to confer on John Boyle Ritchie the degree of Doctor of laws, honoris causa.
Degree received: Doctor of Laws
Degree presented by: E.M. Nanson, professor of surgery
