Women have also been influential in organizing sports and creating environments where athletic ability can be nurtured. Ethel Mary Cartwright (Herstory 1994) began her career based in a small women's college in Quebec, where she "initiated an undergraduate requirement in physical education that even the authorities recognized as setting a standard it would take the men some years to attain." Cartwright's work was largely responsible for the establishment in 1919 of McGill University's Department of Physical Education. In 1929, Cartwright was called out of retirement and began the process again, this time establishing a School of Physical Education at the University of Saskatchewan.
