As assistant to a McGill botany professor, Carrie Derick (Herstory 1976) took over all his duties when he fell ill. When he died, a man was given the job. Only in 1912 did she become the first woman promoted to full professorship in a Canadian university. Colleagues saw her as a brilliant student, an inspiring teacher, an adventurous scientist and a tireless advocate of women's rights.
