Born in 1832 Charlotte Nickinson Morrison (Herstory 1976) was a talented actress who, in her youth, performed all the major Shakespearean roles. As a widow in her forties, she returned to the stage as both the manager of her own theatre and as an actress. Later she retired again and devoted herself to charity and the work of the National Council of Women.

There is still a tendency to relegate artists to amateur status and to comment on their work in the women's pages, where being a housekeeper is the professional thing and being an artist comes definitely second.
(Sandra Gwyn, 1971)
