Charlotte Whitehead Ross (Herstory 1978) began to study
medicine on her own, eventually becoming the first woman to practise medicine in western Canada. In 1881, at about age
40 and with five children, she came to Whitemouth, Manitoba, where
she worked 30 years.
Could anything be more natural and reasonable than that women
whose special business has always been to minister to humanity as
mothers, nurses or teachers should share the work of reconstructing
society on a safer and saner basis?
(Sophia Dixon, 1932)
