Finding a Book

The Murray Library primarily files books by Library of Congress Call Number order.  A few library shelving areas use another call number system. For example, Government Publications uses CODOC call numbers for the material on the 2nd Floor.

When you are looking for a book in the catalogue, it displays the call number on one line.

Using the Call Number to Find a Book

Library books have a call number displayed on the spine of the book.

A call number is broken up into four lines.

HM

Books are filed alphabetically based on the top line  H, HB, HM, HP, HZ.
The letters on the top line represent the subject matter of the book.

621

The numbers are filed in numerical order:  53, 64, 621, 978 and so on.
This line also indicates the subject of the book.  For example HV 40 is for books with an overview of  Social Work.

.C8537
The letters in this line are filed alphabetically so  it is arranged as:  .A, .C, .D

The numbers are treated like decimals. For example, books would be filed in this order:   .C85, .C8537, .C854, .C8549

2011   Year of publication is filed in sequential order,  2010 before 2011

These books are shelved in call number order.
