The smallpox outbreak among the Indians at Isle a la Crosse and vicinity has been effectively checked.
Indian Commissioner Laird has received a communication from the medical man who was sent out to attend to the cases, stating that all danger of a further outbreak was now practically over.
All the Indians at the Souris river post have been vaccinated and communication cut off between them and neighboring tribes.
At Lac La Ronge, a few miles distant from Isle a la Crosse, where it was thought the malady might become prevalent, extraordinary care has been exercised and the danger of an outbreak averted.
No deaths were reported in the letter just received. Five deaths in all have so far taken place. These were reported some days ago. The letter was dated at Isle a la Crosse on the 4th inst.
The doctor will remain in the infected district until Easter, by which time it is thought that every trace of the disease will have been eliminated.
