Province Leads Cancer Research

Regina Leader Post
February 7, 1963. p.10

Saskatchewan is Canada's "banner" province in the fight to discover a cancer cure. George Pifher, of Toronto, secertary-treasurer of the Canadian Cancer Society said in an interview Wednesday in Regina.

"In this province, the cancer research, and research co-operation is something to be admired," he said.

At the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon campus, there are teams of cancer researchers who are paid with funds raised by the CCS.

"They are doing wonderful work and the cancer research is going forward," Mr.Pifher said.

There are more than 89,000 members of the Saskatchewan division of the CCS. This means that one home in every three supports cancer research.

The Society does not treat cancer patients. Its purpose is threefold.

The education of the public about cancer is considered the most important objective. "We are pressing the point of early treatment in Cancer. This, at present, is our major goal in fighting cancer. If patients would go for treatment when the first signs appear, the death reate of cancer victims would surely be lessened.

The raising of research funds to attempt to discover a cancer cure is the second prupose of the Society, which expects to spend up to $1,910,000 in 1963.

The third purpose is to provide a limited welfare program to cancer patients who require supplementary care.

With regard to cancer and smoking, Mr. Pifher said, "We feel there is a definite connection between smoking and cancer, and feel that it is our responsibility to bring these facts to the public."

The CCS is working with medical and health officials in carrying out a program to educate teen-agers.
