New Tools and New Connections at Saskatoon Barcamp 2007

Barcamp Saskatoon was a great way to get together with other folks interested in learning and sharing ideas about technology and people. About 60 folks decided to get together last Saturday and share ideas - the networking was great and so were the sessions.

The social media presentation definitely got people energized. Two sessions that I found particularly interesting were active learning and teaching and a virtual presentation on Attention Surplus Condition in Technology by Pete Quily. Pete posted some links about where to find out more ADHD.

Alot of the sessions focused this year on using new tools and new media in education.

As always I had my eyes and ears open for new tools to try out. Here are a few that caught my eye:

  • Sketchcast - add your sketches with or without voice over to share on your site. Watch the sketchcast below to find out more:

  • VoiceThread - record voice to go with slides or photos. Each voice comment is associated with one image so if you want to change something, it's easy to change just that one. Heather Ross has posted a summary of her barcamp presentation using VoiceThread: Old-Time Apprenticeship Meets 21st Technology
  • Kerpoof - for the kid in all of us. Decorate scences easily. Create a story book.
  • Phixr - online photo editor, like picnik
  • Proxify.com - a way to bypass Internet filters sometimes

Audio and VideoCasting Options

Ryan Lejbak from Zu.com demoed some of the sites. Some I had explored like blip.tv, and online videocasting and podcasting solution or YouTube for sharing videos. Here were some of the sites that I knew less well or were brand new to me. Ryan was looking at sites that allowed you to broadcast live.

  • Justin.tv - lifecasting, no longer just Justin, others can lifecast here
  • UStream.tv - live interactive video, embed code on your web site and has minimal branding
  • BlogTv.ca - broadcast live. Has a Facebook plugin to add to your profile page.

Thanks to the Barcamp Saskatoon sponsors who helped make this event happen.
