Happy Earth Day! How Green is Your Library?
Libraries can do a lot to promote a greener earth. Start small and think big. Your library hold a special program or put up a display? I love this headline from Newton Public Library - "Make everyday Earth day".
There are lots of to help create a green earth that take a wee bit of time but no money. Then there are the ideas that take money but pay back over time. A great place to start is with a green workplace audit. CUPE, the union that a lot of Canadian library workers are members of, has a booklet on Greening Your Workplace and Green Workplace Audit. The Friends of the Earth Scotland have a online green audit tool, too. Doing either of these audits only takes 10 minutes.
Individually, there are small things that each of us can do to make a difference. It takes 20 seconds to to click to save the rainforest (and the rest of the other causes while I'm on their site including literacy, breast cancer, animal rescue ...). You could add this link to the toolbar folder on the Reference Desk computer and encourage co-workers to click to save the rainforest when there's a lull between questions. The sponsors of Rainforest and other sites donate some money each time you click. Only one click per day counts.
