What Does the XML icon mean?

The XML and RSS icons are often used on web pages to indicate content that has been created to be "syndicated" or repackaged for use in an RSS or feed reader. Watch these videos from CNET.com and CBNC-TV, which explain what RSS is.

What Is RSS, and How Do I Use It?

RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is a family of XML based web-content distribution and republication (syndication) protocols primarily used by news sites and weblogs.

Using RSS requires a special news reader or aggregator that displays RSS content from Web sites. There are many different readers available, most of which are free. Most function as desktop software that you download and install on your computer, although there are several Web-based readers available. A complete list of RSS readers can be found at the RSS Compendium.

Examples of desktop readers: Abilon | FeedDemon | RSSReader | SharpReader
Examples of web-based readers: Bloglines | My Yahoo | NewsGator | Rocket

After you have set up your reader, you simply subscribe to the RSS content feeds you want. How this is done depends on the RSS reader you've chosen.

The latest Mozilla browser, Firefox, has an integrated RSS reader, which saves feeds as bookmarks.
