Coal miners in the Estevan area joined the Mine Workers Union of Canada, an affiliate of the revolutionary Workers Unity League. In their struggle for union recognition miners came into conflict with mine owners, the provincial government and the RCMP. This was the first time in Saskatchewan that the RCMP had been called into a labour-management dispute which ended in bloodshed.
