Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the University Council and Senate, I present to you William Stafford Kirkpatrick, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada.
A native of Kingston, Ontario, he received his education at Upper Canada College, the Royal Military College and the University of Toronto. He joined the staff of Cominco as a junior engineer in 1926, and played a leading role in the development and operation of many processes important to the growth of the Company. He advanced through positions of increasing responsibility to the post of chairman, president and chief executive officer.
Mr. Kirkpatrick and the Company he leads have made important contributions to the economy and development of Canada, in particular the West. The interests of the Company have diversified from the production of metals into a variety of chemical products, including nitrogen and phosphate fertilizers. This and their recent expansion into the Saskatchewan potash industry are developments of special importance to our Province.
Mr. Kirkpatrick is also a director of several other companies in America and England and has taken an active and leading role in a wide range of community and national affairs, ranging from welfare projects, industrial associations to government missions. He is President of the Mining Association of Canada and a Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada.
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you William Stafford Kirkpatrick and ask that you will confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
