Convocation date: May 14, 1968

Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the University Council and Senate, I present to you Professor Northrop Frye.
Born in the Province of Quebec he received his early education in New Brunswick, and proceeded to the University of Toronto for his undergraduate training. He was ordained in the United Church ministry in 1936, and after further study in Oxford and Toronto was appointed to the staff of the English Department at the University of Toronto in 1940.
Northrop Frye established himself as a stimulating and challenging teacher, as a scholar, as a literary critic, and his Anatomy of Criticism has been referred to as “the bible of many British and American critics”. Professor Frye has increased our understanding of the conscious and unconscious impact of literary tradition on both author and reader, and has argued that the world of literature and art are not the “real” world, nor should the author or artist be so constrained.
Northrop Frye was the Principal of Victoria College from 1959 to 1966, but relinquished the responsibilities of administration to become the first “University Professor” at Toronto, and to return to full-time scholarly activity. He holds many honorary degrees, has been a visiting professor or lecturer at some hundred universities, and was awarded the Lorne Pierce Medal by the Royal Society of Canada in 1958.
Eminent Chancellor I present to you Northrop Frye, and ask that you will confer upon him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
