Presentation of an Honorary Degree to Lindner, E., May, 1972 (Photograph Collection, A-5245)
Name: Ernest Lindner
Convocation date: May 30, 1972
Discipline / contribution: art
Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellor: On behalf of the Council and Senate I present to you Ernest Lindner.
Ernest Lindner was born in Vienna in 1897. As a youth he received a rigorous training in drawing, which is evident in the perfection of his later work. In 1926 Mr. Lindner came to Canada, and within a few years became a teacher, and later Head of the Art Department at the Saskatoon Technical Collegiate Institute. While his work exhibits a wide range of subjects, many of us are most familiar with the strong, yet exquisite depiction of scenes from the boreal forest.
Mr. Lindner has held significant one-man shows, and important galleries and exhibitions have displayed his work. He is represented in numerous collections, for instance, the Hart House Collection of the University of Toronto, Royal Ontario Museum, Academy of Applied Art, Vienna, Vincent Massey Collection, and the National Gallery of Canada Permanent Collection.
In addition to his own work he has exerted a powerful influence on the development of Art in Saskatchewan informally by his contacts with other, especially younger, artists, and more formally by his willingness to devote his energy to the support of organizations such as the Saskatoon Art Centre, and the former Saskatoon Art Association. He has held high office in the Foundation Committee of the Saskatchewan Arts Board, the Art Curriculum Committee of the Department of Education, the Federation of Canadian Artists, and the Canadian Arts Council.
Eminent Chancellor, I present Ernest Lindner and ask that, in recognition of his great talent and contribution to the development of art in Saskatchewan, you confer on him the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
