As a leader in the use of improved seed, Mr. South has been very active locally, provincially and nationally in the Canadian Seed Growers' Association and has served as both national and Saskatchewan president of the organization. He has participated in a variety of other agricultural organizations, including the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool as committee man, delegate and director, the Melfort Agricultural Society, and the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists. His interest in co-operatives led to his becoming president of the Melfort Credit Union, of the Saskatchewan Co-operative Credit Society, and of Co-op Trust of Canada.
Mr. South has served education at the local level as a school trustee and president of the Melfort Superintendency Trustee Association and at the provincial level as a member of both the Board of Governors and the Senate of the University of Saskatchewan. He has also been a member of the Advisory Council for the University's College of Agriculture and is chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Crop Development Centre on campus.
He was on the Saskatchewan Royal Commission on University Organization and Structure, the Agricultural Services and Research Review Committee of the Saskatchewan Universities Commission, and the Churchill River Board of Enquiry. He is a director of the Saskatchewan Computer Utility Corporation and the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan and a member of the Land Bank Appeal Board.
Mr. South is an honorary member of the Agricultural Institute of Canada, has received the Robertson associate award, which is the highest honor of the Canadian Seed Growers' Association, and was recently made a member of the Order of Canada.
