Citation / biographical information:
Eminent Chancellor, on behalf of the Council and Senate I present you His Excellency, The Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn, Governor General of Canada.
His Excellency was active in the public affairs of this city and province for many years prior to his election to Parliament in 1974. A barrister and solicitor with his family's firm in Saskatoon, Mr. Hnatyshyn was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1973 (Provincial) and in 1988 (Federal). A former member of the RCAF 23 Wing (Auxiliary) of Saskatchewan, the Governor General also served before running for public office as President of the UN Association of Canada (North Saskatchewan Branch), President of the Law Society of Canada, Bench of the Law Society, and President of the Saskatoon Gallery and Conservatory Corporation.
Elected to Parliament first in 1974, Mr. Hnatyshyn was reelected in the general elections of 1979,1980 and 1984. Named to the Cabinet in the Progressive Conservative administrations of Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney, His Excellency served as Minister of State for Science and Technology and Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources (1979-80), then as President of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada (1984-88). In 1987, His Excellency was named Canada's next Governor General and took office on January 29, 1990.
Mr. Hnatyshyn holds B.A. and LL.B. degrees from the University of Saskatchewan. As a student at the University he was active in sports, having played with the Huskies basketball team, and was one of the founding members of the Intensely Vigorous College Nine. From 1966 to 1974 he was a sessional lecturer in the College of Law.
Today marks a fall circle for His Excellency Ramon John Hnatyshyn. As a graduate of this University he went forth, used his knowledge in service to his province and his country, and today we honour him for the excellence of that service.
It is fitting that the University of Saskatchewan confer an Honorary Degree on an alumnus who has brought credit to his profession, his University and his Province. It is also appropriate to confer such an honour on him at the beginning of his time as Governor General. By doing so, we indicate our pleasure at his successes in life before other universities join in the process.
Eminent Chancellor, I present to you His Excellency Ramon John Hnatyshyn and ask that you will confer on him the Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
