John Wedge was born September 6, 1945, in Saskatoon. He graduated from the College of Medicine, University of Saskatchewan, in 1969.

After completion of his surgical education in Saskatoon, Montreal, Toronto and Oxford, U.K., he joined the Department of Surgery (Orthopaedics) in Saskatoon and later became Head of Orthopaedic Surgery, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery, University of Saskatchewan and Head of the Department of Surgery, Royal University Hospital, Saskatoon. In 1988 he assumed the position of Head, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, and in 1992 was appointed the Colonel R.S. McLaughlin Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto. In January 1995, he was appointed Surgeon-in-Chief, The Hospital for Sick Children. Following completion of his tenure in these positions, he served as Associate Dean, Clinical Affairs, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, and Associate Vice-Provost, University of Toronto until 2007.

Dr. Wedge served as the president of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society (1990-91), member and then chair of the Board of Trustees of the Holland Bloorview Children’s Rehabilitation Hospital (2000-07) in Toronto and as a faculty representative on the Governing Council of the University of Toronto. He co-founded SickKids International (SKI) in 2006 on behalf of The Hospital For Sick Children to provide paediatric specialty advisory services to international partners, mostly in developing countries. He was the original chair of the SKI Advisory Council and is currently Senior Medical Executive.

Dr. Wedge is an international authority on complex surgical hip reconstruction in children and adolescents. He has conducted thousands of surgical procedures, trained hundreds of residents and fellows and has published extensively. He has more than 100 publications (peer reviewed, invited and book chapters) mostly focused on childhood and young adult hip deformity and disease. From 2009 through 2013 he was invited Guest Speaker or Visiting Professor to the national specialty organization or universities in ten countries (US, UK, Australia, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal, China, Iran and Israel).

In 2006 Dr. Wedge became an Officer of the Order of Canada for his outstanding contributions to Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery in Canada and beyond. He was named one of ‘100 Alumni of Influence’ for the centennial of the University of Saskatchewan in 2007. In 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for “dedicated service to peers, community and Canada.”

Dr. Wedge lives in Toronto with his wife, Dr. Patty Rigby. His hobbies include reading, golf, running and travel.
