Dr. Carl Zylak was born in Saskatchewan, obtaining his BA and MD degrees from the University of
Saskatchewan. He interned at McLaren General Hospital in Flint, Michigan, completing his
Diagnostic Radiology program at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, followed by a fellowship
year at the University of Manitoba, Department of Pulmonary Medicine and Pathology.
Following ten years at the University of Manitoba, the Winnipeg General Hospital and Health
Sciences Center, Dr. Zylak accepted the position of professor and chairman, Department of
Radiology at McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario. He served the requisite two five-year terms.
During a one-year sabbatical, he completed the coursework in a master's program at McMaster
University in Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics.

He was the founding director of the Ontario Breast Screening Program, a position he held for three years. In 1993, he accepted the position of chairman, Department of Radiology, Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. Dr. Zylak was a clinical professor in the Department of Radiology at the University of Michigan and a tenured professor in radiology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. He became chairman emeritus in1997. He subsequently served as a clinical professor at the University of Arizona, Health Sciences Center, Tucson, Arizona.

Dr. Zylak is a member of many professional organizations. He is past president of the Society of Thoracic Radiology, the Canadian Association of Radiologists and the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the world’s largest radiology society. He is an honorary member of the Toronto Radiological Society (1982), the Polish Medical Society of Radiology (1995), the Pacific Northwest Radiological Society (1996), and the European Congress of Radiology and European Association of Radiology (2004). Dr. Zylak has served as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American Board of Radiology. He was awarded Gold Medals by the RSNA in 1998, and the Canadian Association of Radiologists in October 2003, the Society’s highest honour.

Dr. Zylak has been a visiting professor at over 30 national and international institutions and a faculty member at several international courses. He has over 200 published articles, book chapters, scientific presentations and lectures to his credit. He was a co-investigator in the NCI-funded National Lung Screening Trial and remains as a member of the executive committee.

Dr. Zylak and his wife, Edith Ann, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They have four children, Carl, Christopher, Andrew, Karen, and ten grandchildren.
