The sketches of Muriel Simpson

On Campus News, 10 May 1996

Muriel Jessie Simpson studied pharmaceutical chemistry in London prior to coming to Canada in 1923 to marry University of Saskatchewan history professor and Ukrainian scholar, George Wilfred Simpson. Mrs. Simpson also studied art, her true passion, in Birmingham, Berlin, New York and San Francisco. Although she exhibited in various media, sculpting in wood and marble was her favourite form.

The accompanying images are reproductions of the Simpsons' Christmas cards. These etchings rendered by Mrs. Simpson, together with the printer's blocks used to produce the cards, comprise a portion of the private papers of E.R. Simpson. These are but a few in a three decade series of sketches of University buildings executed by Mrs. Simpson.
