Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a U of S student in order to be hired at the Library?
No. The Library hires full-time U of S students and students of Saskatchewan Polytechnic's Library and Information Technology program for student positions.

How many classes do I have to take in order to be eligible for employment?
U of S students need to take a minimum of 18 credit units (6 three credit unit classes or 3 six credit classes) during the Regular Session, or be registered as a full time graduate student.

Do I need to take my application to each library location that I wish to work at, or can I drop it off somewhere for it to be circulated to each location?
You may either hand deliver a copy of your application to each library location where you want to work at or apply online.

Do I need to know my confirmed class schedule before applying, or can I apply if I have an idea of my schedule?
Changes to your availability can be relayed at the time of your interview.

Can I still apply for a position if I will only be registered as a full time student for 1 term instead of the whole year?
Yes.  However, you will only be employed for the period that you are a full time student.

How many hours/week will I be scheduled for?
It varies among the library locations, however it can range from anywhere between 4 and 12 hours per week.  There are no guaranteed hours of work.

How much will I make/hour?
The wage range for casual employees is $15.25 to $18.30 per hour.

If I am already working at the Library, do I have to reapply?

How many students does each location hire?
It all depends.  Some locations require more help; others less.  The Murray Library requires the most help as it is a larger facility.

How many student positions are there in total (all of the library locations)?
In total, the Library hires approximately 70 students during the Regular Session.  During the summer, the Library requires 10-15 new students as most of our summer positions are filled by students who have worked for the Library in the Regular Session.

If I am hired in one Library branch, can I also work in another Library branch?

If I work at the Library, can I work for another U of S department or college?
Yes, you can work elsewhere in addition to the Library. However, we must ensure that you do not work more than 7 hours per day or 80 hours per month, at all U of S jobs combined.

Where do I go to find out the status of my application and who should I talk to?
Due to the large number of applications we receive, please do not contact us to check on the status of your application.  Only those who will be interviewed will be contacted.  If you are successful at obtaining a position you will be contacted by telephone.
