Science Writing Basics for First-Year Students: Lab Reports and Research Summaries

Workshops

Undergraduate Writing Workshop

As an undergraduate student taking science classes, you will likely write lab reports and research summaries. Lab reports require you to present experiments in a clear, well-organized manner. This workshop will review the IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) for lab reports and discuss some conventions of scientific writing. Research summaries improve your understanding of complex scientific papers, and translate that knowledge to others. You will learn some basic tips for how to synthesize critical information, assess research validity, and communicate key findings. For more advanced science writing instruction, feel free to register in our Scientific Writing: Expressing Difficult Ideas Clearly workshop.

This workshop is intended for undergraduate students. Visit this page to learn about graduate-level writing workshops.
