SASKATOON – The Commission on First Nations and Métis Peoples and Justice Reform has scheduled a meeting with the Justice Commission of the Prince Albert Grand Council on Wednesday, June 25.

The PAGC will make a presentation to the Commission at the Prince Albert Inn, 3680 Second Avenue West, beginning at 9:00 a.m. The event will last until noon and is open to the media and the public.

On Thursday, June 26, the Commission will participate in a community dialogue at Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation. This event will be held in the First Nation’s new justice building between 9:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

As with all community dialogues, the public is encouraged to attend and express their views on the justice system.

"We are looking forward to visiting Beardy’s & Okemasis which we have seen is a very progressive community on many fronts," noted Commission Chair Willie Littlechild. "They have a particular interest in justice issues and we are encouraged by the initiatives they have undertaken," Littlechild added, noting the grand opening of the Willow Cree Healing Lodge on Wednesday, June 25. The Willow Cree Healing Lodge, a 40-bed minimum security facility for federal offenders was built on Beardy’s & Okemasis in an attempt to bring a culturally sensitive approach to Aboriginal offenders who will soon be returned to their communities.

Beardy’s & Okemasis First Nation is located six kilometres west of Duck Lake on Highway 212. It is approximately 60 kilometres south of Prince Albert and 90 kilometres north of Saskatoon.
