Witnessing the eruption of Mt. St. Helen's in 1980 was the catalyst for Catherine Hickson's (Herstory 1995) decision to become a vulcanologist, a profession dominated by men. Working in research with the Geological Survey of Canada, she also speaks to school groups, who are often surprised to discover that Dr. Hickson is a woman. Acknowledging support received, she in turn is working hard to encourage women to go into science.

...male researchers rarely had to worry about children's schedules, regular meals...or clean clothes when engaging in field work.
(Marianne Gosztonyi Ainley, 1987)
