Pisa 2003

PISA, the Programme for International Student Assessment is an internationally standardised evaluation that was jointly developed by participating countries and administered to 15-year-olds in schools. The 2003 cycle was designed to evaluate students' mathematical literacy and problem solving abilities.

Forty-three countries took part in the first assessment in 2000, 41 countries in the second assessment in 2003 and at least 58 countries will participate in the third assessment in 2006.

Typically, PISA testing involves between 4,500 and 10,000 students in each country.

Data and Documentation

The Learning For Tomorrow's World report contains the initial results of the PISA 2003 survey, the focus of which is mathematical literacy and problem solving. The report goes beyond an examination of the relative standing of countries in mathematics, science and reading. It also looks at a broader range of educational outcomes that include students’ motivation to learn, their beliefs about themselves and their learning strategies.

A series of more detailed, thematic reports will be published in 2004 and 2005 with a view to a deeper understanding of the results.

Web Access to Data

Datasets for PISA are available directly from the OECD's web site. This service works best for selecting small numbers of variables. For large numbers of variables consider downloading the complete data file.

PISA 2003 Assessment Framework

This publication presents the conceptual underpinnings of PISA 2003 assessments. Within each assessment area, the report defines the content students need to acquire, the processes they need to perform, and contexts in which such knowledge and skills are applied.
