University Library Learning Commons in the College of Engineering

As of Monday, October 4, 2021, the University Library Learning Commons in the College of Engineering (ULLC) is now open.

The library space in the Engineering Building has been re-envisioned as the University Library Learning Commons (ULLC), a research and learning commons open and accessible to students from across campus. The ULLC is equipped with furniture that supports students studying individually or in groups and for students working on group projects. This includes two bookable group study rooms.

The ULLC space will be open whenever the Engineering Building is open. Computers and a printer/photocopier are available. IT Support can be contacted for any assistance with the computers and printer.

Students can access research, library services, and academic supports online through the library’s Ask Us chat service, through peer-to-peer learning, and through librarian support. The Engineering Librarian is embedded in the academic life of the College of Engineering, working with faculty and students to provide research and learning support.

The learning commons vision started over five years ago. Use of the library space, services, and resources had changed significantly. Space was increasingly used by students for projects and group assignments and for academic skills programming. Borrowing of the print collection had dropped, while use of online resources skyrocketed. In 2016, the majority of the engineering collection was moved out of the library to create a collaborative study space for students. Now after five years in storage, this collection has finally been relocated to the Science Library, along with the remainder of the print collection that was being held in the ULLC. The University Library is pleased to be able to offer this re-imagined space in the Engineering Building which will better serve the emerging needs and desires of students.
