The I-Portal search now includes the option to filter by Indigenous creator. This filter makes it easier for I-Portal users to include Indigenous voices and perspectives in their work.
This has been a huge undertaking, involving the review of each of the I-Portal’s over 70,000 records. A creator is added to the Indigenous creator database when creators have self-identified as Indigenous in the publication or are introduced as an Indigenous creator in the creator biography. Known Indigenous creators who have not self-identified or are not introduced as Indigenous are added on a case-by-case basis.
Once added to the database, the Indigenous creator is tagged to each record associated with that creator. As of June 2024, over 1000 Indigenous creators have been added to the I-Portal, with more being added daily.
A huge thank you to the Indigenous faculty who provided advice and guidance on our implementation of this new feature. We would also like to thank Cleire Lauron and Kwantlen Polytechnic University Library for sharing their lists of Indigenous creators from their χʷəχʷéy̓əm Indigenous Collection.
