Library Open Access Publishing Discounts for USask Authors
The University Library champions open scholarship to promote equitable and sustainable access to information. Here are some updates and reminders on agreements, tools, and services the library has in support of open scholarship.
Agreements
The library has many agreements with publishers to provide USask authors with full or partial discounts on their article processing charges (APCs) for open access (OA) publishing. With the new year, several of our agreements have been renewed and we have joined two new agreements:
- Wiley: USask corresponding authors publishing in Wiley hybrid OA journals are eligible to receive a 100% discount for their OA fees for articles accepted during 2025 & 2026, and a 10% discount in Wiley gold OA journals (hybrid journals are conventional subscription journals that will make individual articles OA for a fee, whereas all articles in gold journals are OA).
- PLOS: USask corresponding authors will receive a 100% discount on APCs for articles accepted during 2025 & 2026 in these PLOS journals: PLOS Complex Systems, PLOS Computational Biology, PLOS Digital Health, PLOS Genetics, PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases, PLOS One, and PLOS Pathogens.
You can see more details and a complete list of agreements by publisher in this online guide.
Tools
We also now have a new Journal Search Tool to help USask authors quickly search to see if their favourite journal is included in one of these agreements. Authors can also browse journals by subject. This tool is embedded in the guide mentioned above.
Services
And don’t forget that you can publish in a conventional paywalled journal and still make a version of your article OA for free and legally through HARVEST, USask’s repository. This will also comply with funder policies for OA. We know this can seem complicated and researchers have limited time, so the University Library now has a HARVEST Upload Service. Let library staff assess copyright policies and do the uploading for you. Just fill out the online form on the link to give us permission to do this on your behalf, then send us your work!
