Preserving the Past, Inspiring the Future: University of Saskatchewan Archives and Special Collections Move to a State-of-the-Art Facility

University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) is relocating to a new facility on the fifth floor of the Murray Library in 2026.

We are thrilled to share an exciting new chapter in the journey of the University Archives and Special Collections (UASC) at the University of Saskatchewan! By 2026, we aim to unveil a state-of-the-art facility on the 5th floor of the Murray Library that will transform how we preserve, showcase, and provide access to our rich collections.

This project represents a significant investment in the future of UASC, with upgrades designed to enhance preservation, access, and engagement for students, researchers, and the community.

What’s Coming:

A Secure and Climate-Controlled Vault
Our collections will be preserved in Class A (Canadian Conservation Institute/ASHRAE) conditions, thanks to a new secure, climate-controlled space with a dedicated HVAC system. Specialized storage solutions, including mobile shelving and oversized material storage will ensure sustainable growth for many years to come.

A Modern Reading Room
The new Reading Room will offer well-lit, inviting spaces equipped with electrical outlets, Wi-Fi, public computers, digitization stations, and tables for oversized materials. Visitors can also enjoy rotating displays that highlight collection treasures.

A Dynamic Commons Area
Outside the Reading Room, the Commons will feature exhibits accessible whenever the library is open to introduce visitors to UASC’s fascinating collections even when the reading room is closed.

An Innovative Presentation Room
Designed for experiential learning, this secure space will host classes and provide access to special collections and archival materials to foster deeper engagement with our resources.

A Flexible Employee Workspace
The expanded employee area will support both individual and collaborative work, boosting our capacity to organize, preserve, and create finding aids for our growing collections.

Temporary Adjustments During the Transition

To ensure a smooth transition, some services will be adjusted starting in May 2025:

  • Reference Services: By appointment only on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. However, voicemails and emails will still be monitored. Full suspension of reference services and closure of the reading room will begin in September 2025
  • Donations and Transfers: Suspended starting July 2025. Urgent cases can be discussed, and we’ll be happy to follow up when normal operations resume.
  • Classes and Tours: We will be unable to offer classes or tours starting September 2025, with plans to resume in the new Presentation Room by June 2026.

Mark Your Calendar

  • Collection Move Begins: January 2026
  • Reopening Target Date: Spring/Summer 2026

We are grateful for your understanding and support as we prepare for this transformative move. While there will be temporary disruptions, the new UASC space will open doors to opportunities for learning, research, and community engagement.

Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this journey together! For more information and updates on services during this transition, visit UASC's renovation page.

Let’s look forward to this exciting new era for UASC!
