Title: The Riel Trial Revisited: Criminal Procedure and the Law in 1885
Notes: A critical analysis of the Riel trial as it related to criminal procedure and the North-West Territories Act of 1880. Five factors are examined: comparison with other treason trials, treason vs. treason felony, venue, fitness to stand trial and composition of the jury. Based on these five factors, the authors come to the conclusion that the trial was "fair" under the prevailing rules of criminal procedure.
