Haultain attempts to explain the origins of the 1885 Rebellion, including issues such as 'race hatred,' the treatment of Indians and Métis, federal party politics, and French-English relations. Haultain uses a number of government and military documents to provide a narrative of the rebellion. Many of the accompanying illustrations were produced by special artists accompanying the expedition to the Northwest.
