Macleod's discussion of the 1885 Resistance is part of his chapter on the military tradition of the NWMP. Although they had a very small part in the military operations in 1885, the NWMP had been responsible for surveillance of Riel and Dumont and for maintaining "good" relations with the Indians. Macleod argues that the influence of the NWMP kept most of the Indians from joining Riel. The published version of this work is at Shortt FC3216.2 .M16 1976.
