Author: Coates, Ken
Title: Western Manitoba and the 1885 Rebellion
Notes: Coates argues that the historiography for the period between the Red River Resistance of 1869-1870 and the Northwest Resistance of 1885 is fragmentary. He believes this is an important period because it helped shape Manitoba's character and reaction to the 1885 Resistance. White settlers in Manitoba took action to protect themselves from the potential threat of the Indians and Métis. Much of this reaction was conditioned by the nature of Manitoba and its relationship with eastern Canada.
