Schull's scholarly biography of Laurier has a brief section on the resistances and Riel's impact on French-English politics. Schull argues that Laurier was concerned about the grievances of the Métis and condemned the Conservative government for forcing them into rebellion. Furthermore, Laurier did not view Riel as a traitor, but as a patriot who was fighting for a just cause.
