Geographic Information Systems (GIS) allow researchers to store, organize, manipulate, analyze, and visualize spatial data. Data are “spatial” when they include information positioning them somewhere on (or relative to) Earth. Spatial research methodologies are used across scholarly disciplines, and may utilize GIS software and spatial data, as well as other cartographic materials such as aerial photographs and maps.
