The University of Saskatchewan Library University Archives and Special Collections would like to invite you to survey some spooky selections from our holdings in honour of Halloween. We have pulled a selection of books, complimenting those on display on the first floor of the Murray Library, ranging from ghost stories and children's books to a rather grim looking anatomy text from 1812, and a 1754 History of the Devil. More University-specific items are also on display, including photographs from early costume parties taken prior to the First World War, ceramic skulls from the now defunct Department of Ceramics, ephemera from the once-yearly Bogey Ball and some textual evidence of the shenanigans students got up to around Hallowe'en in 1915.
These materials show that the spirit of the season has not changed too much over the course of a century. Despite now living in a world that is faster, more connected, and in many ways desensitized, there is still some fun to be had in dressing up and going out. And of course, we can all still enjoy a good scare. The display will be up into November, so take this chance to get your late autumn chills!
