Century marked since Second Battle of Ypres

On April 22, our own Patrick Hayes was quoted in an interview on the centenary of the Second Battle of Ypres, featured in the Star Phoenix. Patrick has been an active member of the University's Great War Commemoration Committee. This group was formed to ensure that the hundred year anniversary of the First World War and its huge impact on the University of Saskatchewan and Saskatoon does not go forgotten.

The group hopes to remember the war in a variety of ways over the next few years, and has already succeeded in updating the honor roll as displayed in the Peter MacKinnon Building, as well as having an informative/commemorative plaque placed there. Under the leadership of Patrick Hayes, the RememberUS website has been created, which represents a large sampling of materials relating to the Great War held at the University Archives and Special Collections. The Committee will be hosting a number of lectures as well and we have already seen talks by Cree author Joseph Boyden, and the University's interim President Gordon Barnhart. A variety of large and small displays are also in the works, including a series of informative three-panel exhibits on rotation at the Peter MacKinnon building (this month "It Is All About Belgium").

For updates on these and other events, follow the GWCC's @RememberUS306 on Twitter, or the University Archives and Special Collections' @sask_uasc. The Facebook page is also a great way to keep up to date!
