Abstract:
Post-Khrushchev Soviet policy and the Vietnam crisis[the new Soviet leadership, convinced that Khrushchev's policy had drifted too far towards rapprochement with the US at the expense of the USSR's standing in the Communist world, began a new effort to reassert itself in Communist nations, specifically North Vietnam, while maintaining detente with the West. However, Soviet plans were upset by the VC attack at Pleiku, for which the USSR was unprepared, and US reprisals, which placed the Soviets in the position of having to choose between giving military support to North Vietnam or opening themselves to Chinese charges of capitulation to the imperialists. The USSR was thus forced to maintain a hard public line against US air strikes and to proceed with assistance to North Vietnam. The Soviets now find themselves faced with a deterioration in relations with the US, a potentially dangerous involvement in the Vietnam conflict, and an aggressive Chinese reaction which has again thrown the USSR on the defensive].
