Abstract:
The covert infiltration of men from North to South Vietnam continued unabated throughout 1965, but changed decidedly in character. Where previous infiltrees had been used primarily to encadre the Viet Cong Main Force, regular units of the North Vietnamese Army (PAVN) are now dispatched to the South as tactical organizations. The presence of eight PAVN units of regimental strength in South Vietnam, totalling some 14,000 men, has now been confirmed. In addition, there are now a number of suspect units in the South which, if confirmed, could raise the total number of PAVN to well over 20,000. In effect, the organizational nucleus of at least three North Vietnamese divisions has already entered South Vietnam.
